The Vila Real de Santo António is located on the right bank of the Guadiana River.
It was the Marquis of Pombal who commissioned it to build in 1774 to sign the Portuguese presence at the mouth of the Guadiana before Ayamonte in order to control trade at the border and develop fisheries.
Later, when the canning industry was born, the construction chose to convey simplicity and functionality through the Pomeranian style, reflecting the spirit of the Enlightenment of the time.
Today, the city works for trade and tourism. The location (source) is the mouth of the Guadiana, (south) beach (west), pine forest (west) and northern Sapal nature reserve.
